Description The lush Akaka Falls flow to a pool below on the Big Island of Hawaii, near Hilo. From Wikipedia Online Encyclopedia: Akaka Falls State Park is a state park on Hawaii Island, in the U.S. state of Hawaii. The park is about 11 miles (18 km) north from Hilo, west of Honom off the Hawaii Belt Road (route 19) at the end of Hawaii Route 220, 19 5115N 15599WCoordinates: 195115N 15599W. It includes Akaka Falls, a 422 feet (129 m) tall waterfall. Akaka in the Hawaiian language means 'A rent, split, chink, separation; to crack, split, scale'. The accessible portion of the park lies high on the right shoulder of the deep gorge into which the waterfall plunges, and the falls can be viewed from several points along a loop trail through the park. Also visible from this trail is Kahn Falls. Trail in park, 1959 Local folklore describes a stone here called Phaku a Pele that, when struck by a branch of lehua pane, will call the sky to darken and rain to fall. Lehua pane or hia pane is an hia tree (Metrosideros polymorpha) with dark red blossoms. Akaka Falls is located on Kolekole Stream. A large stone in the stream about 70 feet (21 m) upstream of the falls is called Phaku o Kloa.
Don Schwartz, Portland, Oregon Member Since September 2012 Artist Statement Photography is for me a dance with nature. It is the immersion in a landscape; the sharing of a habitat with nature’s creatures. It is the sense of being lost in the moment, where the passing of time goes unnoticed. It is the serendipity of capturing a moment in time that becomes a timeless moment. The quiet places, the places of simple beauty, draw me in – from the delicate splendor of dew dancing on an iris petal to the magnificent breadth of a gray whale slicing through the water. With my camera, I am a blessed witness in a field of splendor.
