Artist Statement Joe Prater was born in 1938 in Tuskahoma, Oklahoma, of Choctaw Indian and English heritage and has been interested in art for as long as he can remember. He works in transparent watercolor and oils. Joe says, "Western and Cowboy life, landscapes and portraits are my main interests. Western people and the western way seem to find their way to the forefront of most of my paintingsā€.

Joe was raised in Parsons, Kansas, where he attended Parsons Junior College to study art under instructor Zada Chase. Later he studied at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri, with watercolorist Jim Bray and he has also studied with such noted artists as Joe Garcia (Julian, CA), Adele Earnshaw (Sedona, AZ), Bob Tommy (Carthage, MO) and George Kontoupous (Tulsa, Oklahoma). Joe has also taken workshops and seminars with John Moyer (Santa Fe, NM) and Tom Lynch (Chicago, IL).

His art has been exhibited at numerous art shows in the four states of Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma and has won several awards. He was invited to exhibit his work in the Midwest Gathering of Artist in Carthage Missouri in 2002 and 2003. Joe has also shown his art at the gallery at 50 Penn Place in Oklahoma City.
