Description In the American Civil War battle near Antietam Creek in Maryland, the space between the breastworks (where the statue now stands) became known as 'Bloody Lane.' During a 4-hour period on September 17, 1862, about 5500 soldiers were killed or wounded in close-range fighting. It was the most lethal day in American history. This winter image was posted on Memorial Day, 2013.
