On Hearing Bach in An Unfamiliar Church
In a plain white church we gathered, waiting for music. Cold northern sunlight streamed in through tall mullioned windows paned with the wavy glass found only in the oldest of New England buildings.
Although alien to me, drenched as I am in the tradition of incense, painted statuary and Gothic stone, I settled comfortably into the simplicity.
And then the music filling that small space with majesty. It took to me to a place where I could close my eyes and, unseeing, smile. 2013 RC deWinter
This organ, opus 154, resides in Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Killingworth, Connecticut. It was built by Karl Wilhelm Inc. of Mont-St.Hilaire, Quebec, Canada, designed and constructed construction true to historic 17th-century specifications. The free-standing case is white oak, and the pipe shades are hand-carved butternut gilded with 22 karat gold leaf. Ebony covers the natural keys; the sharps are rosewood plated with cow bone. There are 8 metal pipe stops and the Bourdon, 16' and 18', are played with the feet on a pedal board. In all the organ has 635 pipes capable of producing a wide range of sound, from soft to bright and majestic.
