Nina Spencer, Dover Member Since August 2009 Artist Statement I am a self-taught folk artist born and raised in Louisiana and living most of my adult life in Delaware. I have been painting for over 20 years, often capturing images generated from stories of the past, folklore, and a lot of a child's imagination. This style of painting I find often provides a sense of joy and happiness. My collectors often times say that viewing my art, with its vivid colors and reflections from a child's perspective, is delightful.
My parents both influenced my style. My father, being a Pastor, invoked such a strong spiritual upbringing that it has flowed into my images of baptisms and of angels, many having a spiritual connotation. And my mother's lyrical and melodic voice gave me the movement and the color.
I have produced a number of series over the years including “Water Melon Babies, Life on the Bayou, Baptisms and Wash Girls". While I remain true to what got me started, I am also embarking on a new 25 piece body of work entitled "Stroke of Genius", which is somewhat of a departure from the focus of my earlier work but still true to my folk artist style.
