Description Acrylic on canvas. Detail of Brugmansia Ecstasy painting. This image came to me during a meditative state. Brugmansia flowers, also known as angel trumpets, are used in shamanic intoxication - to promote communication between the spiritual world. These shamans act like messengers, are known for mending souls and can express meaning through art. Shaman means 'one who knows' and a specific shaman called a psychopomp is known in Jungian circles as a mediator between the conscious and unconscious worlds. Brugmansia are poisonous and can be fatal if ingested incorrectly, so the shamanic ingestion is very ritualized. I found all this out AFTER I painted the piece, but I feel that is what the piece is about.
Sondra Sula, Fort Bragg, CA Member Since June 2008 Artist Statement Painting is my first love - I've been influenced by German Expressionism and Fauvism. Emotion through the use of color is very important to me. I adore extreme, brilliant color and have a preference for figurative work. I've been painting for many years, have been in over 40 shows, and have had previous representation with galleries in Chicago and Santa Fe. I am now with a gallery in Elk, California.
I work in several forms of art including photography, oil pastel and "Little Souls" which are found-object mosaic-like pieces, that serve as small framed shrines. Creativity is a gift to be enjoyed by those who create and those who observe - ENJOY!
Make sure to visit all of my galleries. I'll be adding new work on a regular basis. Thank you for visiting!
