Description Charlie Chaplin (16 April 1889 25 December 1977) was an English actor, comedian, and filmmaker, who climbed to stardom during the silent era. Through his screen persona 'the Tramp,' Chaplin became a worldwide icon and is rightly considered one of the greats in the history of the film industry. A master of pantomime, Charlies unique and quirky body language turned 'The Tramp' into the most popular persona of the silent-film era. Chaplin went on to become a director, making films like City Lights and Modern Times, and co-founded the United Artists Corporation. From his Victorian childhood, his 75 year career encompassed both adulation and controversy. Chaplin's fiery opposition to injustice brought him into conflict with the communist fighting zealots of the McCarthy era when he was living in his adopted country, the United States. Chaplin became a target of right wing conservatives. Representative John E. Ranking of Mississippi pushed for his deportation and in 1952, the U.S. Attorney General banished him from returning to the States after a vacation in Britain. The incensed Chaplin said goodbye to United States and on a small farm in Vevey, Switzerland took up residence. In the closing years of his career, Chaplin made one last return to the U.S. In 1972, when he received a special Award from the Motion Picture Academy. In 1975, Chaplin was knighted by Queen Elizabeth.

At eight years old in the late 50’s, I started private training in traditional oil techniques. To this day, I owe my appreciation to my mother, who has since passed away. Through considerable personal sacrifice, she nurtured my artistic talent and provided me with the tools and circumstances to begin my creative journey - the journey that I still follow. I cherish the memories of the art exhibits and museums that we visited in Manhattan. I later attended The School of Visual Arts in New York City (1970-71). During the 70's and up until the late 80's, I exhibited acrylic and oils in Montreal and New York. Presently, I reside in Florida with my loving wife, who I've been married to for thirty years. Due to the onset of chronic illness in the late nineties and with the advent of image editing software, I turned to creating digital hand painted images and photographic art - fusing these into an art form worthy of the same gratification that I had once found in oils. - Spadecaller (Matt Schwartz)
