Artist Statement After years as a business software developer I now devote my time to the creation of digital art. Most digital art appears vapid to me, so my challenge is to make things that are original and speak of a human heart and mind behind what is machine-made.

There are basically two types of digital images – pixel-based and vector-based. Pixel-based images - for example, digital photographs - are comprised of a grid of individual screen pixels or printed dots. Such images are created or edited in software applications like Adobe Photoshop©.

I work with the other type of digital image – vector-based. Vector graphics use geometrical primitive objects such as points, lines, curves, and polygons, which are all based on mathematical equations and X-Y coordinates, to represent images. The advantage of vector graphics over “bitmap” images is that vector images can be scaled up indefinitely without losing any resolution whatsoever, making them ideal for large prints.

As a career software developer I’m intrigued by the almost infinite variety of effects that can be achieved by writing software programs that modify, often randomly, the shapes and colors of the components of images. My aim: to make images that force us to enjoy color and shape for their own value without context. I’d rather make people smile than make them think.
