Artist Statement I have had a love of photography since I was in the 5th grade. I grew up shooting film and living in a darkroom both growing up and in college. My love and genesis of photography comes from the landscapes of Ansel Adams and portraits of Dorothea Lange, Arnold Newman and Edward Weston. For me I prefer Black and White photography over color because of the distraction that color can produce. Where as black and white photography conveys mood, and texture of the subject without color competing for the viewers attention.

After graduating college I was a commercial portrait photographer working in retail shops and on my own. With the digital age exploding I found myself more and more on the side of purest. Having that background with the development of film and printing of my images I have a deeper skill set when if comes to photography. I know that can sound elitist but after many encounters with people who have not spent time developing film or making their prints in a darkroom, I find they pay more attention to the display on the back than the fundamentals of photography. This is not to say I don’t shoot with a digital camera, I do. I have to because of circumstance which leave me no place for a darkroom. So I instead shoot and work in Photoshop as if I was in a darkroom. This is as pure, for the moment, I can be for now.

I am currently working on images that are around my garden to places I see when cycling in Iowa. As the seasons change this year I hope to capture the most dramatic parts of the season for myself and others to enjoy. Most I hope will be in black and white but I will do a few in color if color is the subject and not the distraction. I hope you enjoy my galleries and if you do please pass them on to a friend.
