Description Symbol of Joyce After BrancusiMrs. Caresse Crosby asked a famous abstract painter, Constan Brancusi, to do a portrait of Joyce for her and when he produced it she went apoplectic, as the painting resembled Joyce. She said, ' Had I wanted a likeness of Joyce I could have gone to any old artist. You are a famous abstract artist so please do me a symbol of Joyce in the style of Brancusi.' The curlicue was produced and described as 'an enigmatic involution' of which Joyce approved. When James Joyce's father saw the sketch in Dublin he remarked gravely 'The boy seems to have changed a good deal'! I have taken his basic drawing and enhanced it or otherwise as you please Madam!
