Seeking Sprites
There is a small creek hidden in the wood that runs along the far side of the field out back. Long ago and far away there was a cottage too, long since pulled down; the fieldstone from which it was constructed hauled away and put to other uses. Only the cracked and crumbling stones of stairs tumbling down from what must have been the back door remain, along with slates now overgrown with the careless and untended sprawl of nature. Whoever built that cottage put it hard against the creek, a smart decision in the days when water still was often hauled by hand.
Many's the time I go down there in the warmth of a summer evening; I am undisturbed but for the songs of night birds and the ever-present crickets. I sit surrounded by green growing things and peer into the mirror of the creek, imagining the lives of water sprites who have never deigned to reveal their presence. I know they're there; occasionally I catch a note or two of their sweet singing, much softer, more melodious, than that of birds. I daresay the tiny rainbow asters that bloom despite the rock surrounding are perches for their sunning; yes, water sprites emerge when sure no human eyes are present.
Although my chiefest love is the salt water of the ocean that lies many leagues away, and dream of being a scaled citizen of its majestic depths, I am a prisoner of this interior with no wild waves in which to revel. For such a one as I, however, any water is a gift, better than none. And so, closing my eyes as twilight fades to black I shed my skin, leaving the shadow me upon on the ground, and dive, hoping each time to find the secret sisterhood that swims the hidden creek. ~ copyright 2014 RC deWinter&l
