home from the hills
another night drive through the winding hills and i'm tired needing coffee and something to eat and a bathroom but there's nothing like that out here under the icy autumn moon
i'm forty miles or more away from civilization a diner a bar even a gas station where i can grab something to stifle the growling in my guts and stretch my legs and pee and maybe even talk about the weather
it's a cold fall but there's been plenty of rain so the leaves are brilliant in their dying these hills are a new england patchwork no quilting circle could ever rival
the sugar maples flaunt shades of red and gold and everything in between while the stately pines hold steadfast in their emerald stillness
it's pretty enough but a little too quiet even for me who loves silence and nature but also needs the library the ocean and the occasional night out without having to drive hours to enjoy them
as i round a curve a farmstead off to my right isolated lonely and small suddenly sends me back half a century and i hear my father laughing she's so crazy about animals she oughta marry a farmer
i never did and how useless i would have been a down at the heels dreamer completely unfitted for the tasks of a farmwife suited only for the ephemera of the creative
impractical and while not exactly lazy unwilling to wed myself to unrelenting labor the twelve-hour days and sometimes nights too with no vacations and damn little leisure a life spent pitting time and hope and money against the vagaries of nature
the memory spurs me to step on the gas and hurry even faster to the nearest town for food and drink and a warm bathroom and as i fly down the road i murmur sorry dad that was
