Artist Statement Fuller Photography

An artist's creative body of work is a reflection of her life's experiences. When a life has been as rich and full as photojournalist Nina Fuller's, the work is diverse and lively.

Nina grew up in rural Westchester County, New York, surrounded by a menagerie of equal parts family, friends, and animals. There her creative roots were planted and nurtured.

Formal art education included an AFA in Photography from Silvermine College of Art in New Canaan, Ct. and a BA in print making from George Washington University in DC. She continued professional development at the forefront of the digital photography revolution at the Center for Creative Imaging in Camden, Maine, The Photography Workshop in Rockport, Maine, the Haystack School, in Deer Isle, Maine, and an apprenticeship with Fashion Photographer Nancy Brown, in New York City.

Nina settled in Maine in the early 70's, and artistically assaulted Portland from her farm in New Gloucester. She was a creative force, in the early, halcyon days of the Old Port. Her work was a vital part of the Wise Guide newspaper and the founding of the Portland Independent. She chronicled of the music scene, both rising local talent such as Devonsquare, Schoonerfare, Don Campbell, and national touring acts such as the Grateful Dead, The Village People, Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Judy Collins, The Tubes, and more.

Her engaging people skills and talent were widely acknowledged and led to assignments with Presidents Bush, One and Two, first lady Barbara Bush, Bill and Hillary Clinton, assorted governors, senators, state representatives, and a diverse group of other notables. Commercially her credentials are impressive, with corporate clients like L.L. Bean, Lands End, Dover Saddelry, Active Travel Inc., Minnowknits, Goldenrod Garage, and many others. All of whom have noted her ability to see a job through from start to finish with a creative, credible result.

Personally, Nina is a single parent of two incredibly accomplished children. Her son, Spencer is a recent Political Science graduate from Colorado College, and her daughter Lily is currently pursuing a pre-med degree at New York University. Nina’s work often captures their journey, reflecting both children's commitment to making the world a better place through international travel and volunteerism.

Nina's work continues today, based in a carriage house studio at her horse farm in Hollis Maine. She photographs important events for families, supports her commercial clientele, and captures beauty and irony wherever she is.

Traveling the world photographing and writing about her experiences, Nina’s work has appeared in the Boston Globe, The New York Times, National Geographic Traveler, Practical Horseman, Women and Horses, Mountain Living Magazine, Animal Fare, and others international publications.

As one of only a few selected photographers in the Vocation Vacation program, she introduces others to the foundations of her métier. Her creativity, uncommon people skills and uncompromising artistic integrity combine to make her a continuing force in the local, national, and international photojournalism realm.

In addition to the Vocation Vacation one on one workshops, Nina gives group workshops at her farm in Maine and at the Mountain Top Inn in Vermont where she shares her experience and understanding of photography with those who aspire to see the world in a new and exciting way.
