off-roading it
ruts in a road have never deterred me something worthy or merely tempting glimpsed however briefly has always lured me a rat unable to resist the music of the piper
too often what waited at the end of those roads has been misery or worse fool's gold disguised as treasure a cul-de-sac of disappointment a forced march back to where i started
these days my lacks line up in military rows stern soldiers standing stiffly at attention every morning at the foot of my bed awaiting my inspection
but i lackluster general at best ignore them too many roads to map all mined with humiliation uncertainty self-doubt all intersecting in a circle of impossibility i am as yet unfitted to command that portion of my life
instead i wander not aimless but with no clear direction ears stoppered to the melody of madness the hidden piper plays i stay in open fields resisting roads into dark woods or penned enclosures
i do not know what form the thing i seek will take it is nothing to be seen i must trust i'll recognize it when i feel it it is no tangible reward that calls me i'm looking for a heart to come home to
