Then, because this is a lousy world, we finally got the news. Mike was dead, killed at Kham Duc. Dad never could get it straight and whenever Mike's name come up he'd tell people about how he was killed at Damn Duck. The whole steelworks turned out for the funeral and nothin' was the same after that. Funny thing, my number never did come up. After a coupla years me and Helen Flaherty got married. I felt bad leavin' Ma, 'cause with Mike gone she leaned on me a lot, but a guy's gotta live his life, ya know?
Been a lotta water under the bridge since then. Dad and Ma are gone. I was lucky enough ta retire before the steelworks closed up, so me and Helen got a nice little house, two girls and four grandkids. Everybody knows about Uncle Mike; I made sure a that.
Even though I'm past ridin' a bike much, every day it ain't rainin' Mike's old bike is out on the back patio. I keep it polished up just like he woulda wanned. Sometimes I think I shoulda been the one ta go, but we ain't got no control over things like that. I still miss him like hell, but I'm grateful for what I got - 'specially his old bike.
