Jaguar, power, dance and transformation are symbolized and expressed in a painting. Here a Maya lord takes the shape of his animal self or uay, a Jaguar. His belt holds the symbol of heaven and jade beads.
The Jaguar was the most revered animal in Mesoamerica. They played a large roll in the Maya religion and were an important Shamanic creature. The Jaguar, with its power and grace, held the top position in the food chain and this supremacy was greatly admired and sought after.
In states of ritual transformation, humans changed themselves into jaguars from at least Olmec times onward. Kings, chiefs and shaman often wore the pelts, sandals, and headdresses made from the Jaguar. Necklaces of jade beads in the shape of jaguar teeth and stone thrones often took the form of the Jaguar.
A vase from the Altar de Sacrificios from the Maya Late Classic Period (600 900 AD) was the inspiration for my silk painting. In my interpretation, I sought to create the feeling of a painting on the wall of a temple. My choice of greens and the technique I used in the background, was to create the sense of aged stone and moss, but also to represent jade. Jade (jadeite) is associated with life and renewal of life and is the most important stone in the Maya culture. Original painting on silk 24' x 30'

I absorb nature, through every sense. Traveling, diving, sailing, and hiking through rain forest and exploring ancient cultures; their arts and ruins. It fills my mind and soul.
I work daily from nature, a leaf, a landscape, a green iguana, an orchid - there is beauty in the smallest things. It is the process, the focus of attention to detail, that enriches my soul, not the finished pen drawing or watercolor in my sketchbook. Recreating what is before me, in a simple sketch, anchors it in my mind forever.
When I am observing nature on location, I paint in watercolor or draw in ink. When I'm in my studio it all changes, sometimes only to do a rework in the same medium, but more often I wait and let the fresh sketch filter through my dreams and evolve into a completely new composition and different medium, more surreal but no less detailed. That process I cannot explain, it is an amazing metamorphoses. My sleeping self is much wiser and in more control of the medium and composition than my conscious self, which is a bit disappointing but a fact I've come to accept. I simply paint what and how my sleeping self has dictated - and it all goes smoothly.
While living in the Cayes of Belize and Honduras. I was wholly immersed and in love with the turquoise sea and all of the marine life there. I could have turned into a mermaid; it was not for lack of sea time. Dives filled with wildlife filter into dreams, and dreams morph into a Night's Tale, then into a painting. My encounters with wild dolphins were days of life altering joy.
