Bio : My professional career began in 1973, at Hanna-Barbera Studios in Hollywood Ca. as a novice cartoonist in the animation department working on such cartoon series as Scooby Doo, Speed Buggy, Josie & the Pussycats, The Hair Bears, Harlem Globetrotters, Wacky Races, Inch High Private Eye, and Yogi's Gang . In the late 70's I became Billboard Magazine's first editorial cartoonist in their long history. In the early 80's I had the opportunity to paint aircraft (from small corporate jets to large jet liners). In the 80's I created a few concert posters for the late promoter Bill Graham. Those were for concerts at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. Check out www.wolfgangsvault.com (search > shurtz)
Over the last seven years I have been primarily working in oil-on-canvas, I still do illustration and cartoon in other mediums and love to still work in pen-and-ink, pencil, pastels and water color. I will add galleries for other mediums when I have the chance to have them shot digitally.
I am a great believer in On Demand Printing. It allows me to keep my original artwork and produce great archival prints on papers or canvas, that I can hand work & sign.
I am currently designing illustrations for a children's book by the late novelist/screenwriter Terry Southern. This is the only children's book he ever wrote. The title of the book is, The Donkey and the Darling. It is being edited by his son (and award winning author in his own right) Nile Southern.
I am also writing and illustrating my own children's book titled Lonesome Bear,
inspired by, none other than, the bears you see in my gallery. It will incorporate pen & ink illustrations and full color reproductions from my Bear Series. Also in the works, is an animated short film titled The Salt Ant & The Sugar Ant, which I had the privilege of designing. The animation is being executed in England. I'm excited to see the final product.
Thanks for visiting my galleries ! Peace, Mike
