Artist Statement Mr. Bauer is a fisheries biologist in northern California. His love of fish drew him to the art of Gyotaku fish printing.
Gyotaku is a traditional form of Japanese fish rubbing, dating from the mid 1800s, a form of nature printing used by fishermen to record their catches.
Paint is applied directly to a fish, before a sheet of rice paper is pressed onto the fish. The result is a life-like gyotaku print of the fish.
All of the fish used in Mr Bauer's prints were caught by hook and line in accordance with local laws.
