DescriptionThe Kumu hula is the master instructor of this dance form. Kumu means source of knowledge. The ancient hula was an expression of life and love. The dancer became one with the motions, the chanting and the music. The chant or song is called a mele. The hula dramatizes or comments on the mele. This sacred, flowing and elegant dance passed ancient tales and other stories from one generation to the next. Here you see Kumu Hula refining the mastery of her skills with choppy waters only a few feet away and wind racing through her long hair, as mist cloaks canyons in the distance where lava pours toward the sea.
