Artist Statement I was born in Washington D. C., and moved to California with my
parents and my older brother when I was four years old. This was shortly after World War II, and in the next twelve years my parents added four more siblings to the brood. There is a nineteen year span between the 6 of us, so the conversation at the dinner table was always interesting with lots of different ideas being expressed―very often, all at the same time.

For the next 10 years we lived in the San Fernando Valley of California when it was mostly farmland. We lived on a little ranch, and always had numerous farm animals to raise and take care of. I enjoyed the rural upbringing and loved playing in the fields and orange groves, making forts and sculpting little villages in the adobe mud.

There were few children in the area, and because there was such a big
age difference between myself and brothers and sister, I was usually left
to my own devices for entertaining myself. I always enjoyed arts and
crafts as child, and spent lots of time making ‘things’ out of whatever I could find to be creative with.

When I was fourteen, we moved to Santa Barbara, California and began
the beach lifestyle. We had a small home just a few blocks up from
Ledbetter beach (a subject of many of my paintings) and we all spent a lot of time down by the water. My brothers and sister and I finally had a
multitude of other kids in the neighborhood (my future husband being one of them). I am grateful though that I was able to experience the east coast, rural farm life, and then the beach lifestyles all as a child growing up.

I married at a young age and by the time I was 23, I had two little
girls. I was a stay at home mom and that was when I began to
paint―although sporadically. After my children were in high school, I went to work and the painting stopped for a period of time. And then I took it up
again when I retired at age 56.

Painting with lots of color and sweeping strokes is a very relaxing
outlet for me. I usually have a piece planned when I start, but often my
plan changes dramatically as I move along. It is so much fun to watch a
painting evolve―and sometimes turn out to be quite a surprise.

I have a very diverse collection because I have so many ideas.
I know that painting the same subject over and over allows an artist to achieve perfection, but I find it stifling to ignore my many ideas. When I think of something to paint, I can’t wait to get started, and I love every minute of the process.

I hope you enjoy what I have created.
