Description Nathan Handwerker was an employee of Feltman's German Gardens in Coney Island. Encouraged by singing waiters Eddie Cantor and Jimmy Durante, he left to open a business competing with his employer. Nathan's was opened in 1916 selling nickel hot dogs, half the price of his former employer. The rest is history. This is the original store which stands on the corner of Surf Avenue and Stillwell Avenue in Coney Island, New York. American Paintings series.
