Mark Whitesell, Seattle
Member Since October 2009
Artist Statement Born in Ontario, Canada, Mark moved to the USA in 1967 and has lived in the Pacific Northwest since that time. His interest in painting and photography sprouted in his high-school days (Queen Anne grad of 1973) when he dabbled with oils, acrylics, and watercolors and used a Brownie camera passed down to him from his parents. His interest in photography took a serious leap forward when, as a wedding gift, his wife presented him with his first SLR camera.

Mark worked diligently to hone his darkroom skills and soon had his prints on display and for sale in local shops and fairs. If you are lucky enough, you may still have some of his original silver-halide prints.

As time went on, computer technology grew and matured and Mark kept pace with it, combining his film-based photography with digital on a computer by using a scanner. In 2001 Mark went 100% digital and has continued growing with the digital medium. All of his current photographs are created using a digital camera, and are “developed” on a computer.

In 2004, Mark began developing the digital technique he now calls “Paintillism”, which is the manual manipulation and scrubbing of the “emulsion” of a digital photograph. The resulting print has visual characteristics of oil or watercolor paintings.

Mark’s photography and Paintillism have been displayed and sold in shops, museums, street fairs, and online.
