This porch used to be painted blue, but when what happened happened there was blood from one end to the other and down the step to the walk, which is where they found him; to this day the wood is scarlet.
No matter what, though the porch was scrubbed clean and repainted again and again, after awhile the whole thing would turn red, as if neither Jack nor Lureen wanted to let go. No wonder the bank couldn't sell it.
So, back to the beginning.
When I'm feeling lonely and sorry for myself this is where I come, to sit in the sunset on the scarlet step and smoke and know that with any luck I'll die peacefully. Strange as it sounds, I always feel better about being alone - no man would have me - when I think about what could happen when someone's crazy in what they think is love, but what it really all boils down to is ownership.
Sometimes I run my fingertips along the step while I'm sitting and they come away red. Not wet, though, or sticky - just red. When I turn my hand back down the red falls away like ash into the fine cracks of the wood. I have no explanation for this; I don't worry about it much. Things are the way they are. What happens happens. We're the kind of people who're happy to leave it that way. ~ Excerpt from When What Happened Happened, copyright 2015 RC deWinter
