Chasing the Horizon
Living in my forest, hiding from despair 'Neath a canopy of loneliness inside the walls of fear, Yet a single ray of happiness creeps into my room, Giving comfort in the darkness, Piercing brightly through the gloom. An enigmatic visitor, taunting me with hope, Dispelling all the demons with which I cannot cope, Like chasing the horizon or Saint Elmo's fire, Reaching out to touch and finding It not there. But am I really reaching, or pushing it away, Hiding in the shadows and Running from the day? Bitterness is easier, its path so well-defined, Uncluttered by the footprints of the Pain inside my mind. But for happiness we pay a price, if it's How we wish to live, For happiness the price we pay is What it costs to give. I have so much to offer but from here It's hard to see, So welcome you! my visitor, This time I will not flee. For in a different world - so different From this place, you've helped me see I've touched someone and brought a Smile to his face. Chasing the horizon is not such a futile task, When we set aside our fears and Take away the mask. It's then we know who loves us for what We are inside, Obscuring the horizon with the Rising of the tide. ~ 1997 Serendipity
This poem was written about and for me by the same person who christened me Venus deRhymer, a name I was once known by. Thank you, Joe, wherever you are.
