Artist Statement Chau Deymonaz was born in Vietnam and moved to America when she was a teenager. She has always been interested in artistic expression whether through music, flower arranging or ice skating, but in 2007 she discovered her interest in painting. She enjoys being creative and feels more connected to her own life through her art.
In 2008 she participated in a group art exhibit at the Kirkland Arts Center displaying “The Girl”. She has taken various classes but is primarily self-taught, experimenting constantly with different styles and mediums. Life became busy though and in late 2008 she stopped painting. However, in 2010 she picked up her brushes again while recovering from an illness. The first painting she created during this time was called “Mysterious”, an abstract in oil.
More recently, she has been focused on dramatic portraiture in charcoal. Chau discovered this latent talent after the passing of a friend in a piece aptly titled “Remembering Chris”. In her portraiture she tries to capture the personality, the soul, of the person. She does not want her art to merely be pretty; she strives to evoke true feelings in the viewers.
People frequently ask her: "What kind of art do you do?" and her usual response is; "It depends on my mood. If I’m in a red mood I’ll do a red painting.” While her mood helps her pick the subject matter and color it also picks the medium. Whether it’s a highly textured acrylic abstract, a stark black and white charcoal or a soft watercolor, the experiences and emotions of her life all find their way into her art.
Chau intends to keep drawing and painting as this it brings her so much joy. She plans to take photos during her annual New Year trip to foreign countries and will use some of these as references for future paintings.
