Artist Statement Chip Marks is artist, photographer, writer, musician and a new resident of Frankfort Michigan. For many years a calligrapher and lettering artist, his fascination with letters has continued to today. Prior to 2008 he worked in the corporate world as a director of marketing, photographer and graphic designer. An accomplished fashion and product photographer, he worked in advertising for many years, directing many marketing campaigns.

Chip spent almost 12 years working and living in a small town in western Kansas, almost literally ground zero of the dustbowl of the thirties. He spent much of his time traveling the roads and prairie looking for the photo that had a story that spoke to ones deepest emotions. The area was ripe with stories and artifacts, loss and abandonment everywhere. The last three years he spent traveling the American west with a lot of that time spent in Pacific Northwest, the polar opposite of the Midwest prairies. The oceans and mountains were a breath of fresh air giving a new perspective to everything that had come before.

Born and raised in Lansing Michigan he left many years ago looking for the places he had never seen. For love of family he has relocated back to Michigan and plans to take the next few years to rediscover his home and the stories that live here.

Before moving to Frankfort Chip went back to college to pursue a degree in art which had always been a dream. The two semesters he attended before taking over as caretaker for his grandson, Chip made the dean’s list both semesters, and was published in the school yearly artists and writers book of the schools best. He was chosen from all art students to show in the schools yearly gallery show. Currently Chip is the primary caretaker of his grandson Neo and they relocated to Frankfort Michigan in the Spring of 2012 to walk the beaches in the summertime and explore whatever they feel like at the time. The priority to provide a nurturing environment for his grandson has put his dream of a degree on hold. He continues to show work in Michigan and Indiana. When not caring for Neo he is devoted to his work whether taking photographs, painting, calligraphy, writing, playing music and volunteering in the area where ever he can help.

Chip Marks has had a presence on the internet for over 25 years originally at www.triberadio.com and now at www.chipmarks.com.
