Surveying My Garden
Spring - the eternal return - has not failed us. The world is blooming, greening up. Color splashes what was once bare and brown; trees leaf out, robing bare branches. Some of them burst with blossoms; others sport small flags in a myriad of shapes and shades.
In the garden the earliest flowers are already gone by, but others appear, a bright patchwork parade. They will be followed by yet more, the sunworshippers of summer, the sturdy soldiers of fall.
Still, unless one is scrupulous, vigilant, invaders will appear, clotting the plot with rapacious unseen roots, unlovely leaves strangling what we intend to be there.
I look at the garden of my life and see the same. I sit in autumn's anteroom; there are no more coy and careless springs. Yes, there are flowers, but they have not the delicacy that thrives only in the steady kiss of sun.
And I have been neglectful, an inattentive steward at best. Weeds sprawl, their coarse voracious vines threaten that which should be nurtured. And yet I sit, not finding strength to dig and hack, removing all that clearly shouldn't be.
Perhaps it is because my days are numbered; perhaps I've lost the lusty will to thrive. Perhaps one day I'll waken from this torpor, take up the spade and shears and clear out that which chokes my garden.
It may be it is too late, the weeds entrenched. Perhaps I'll simply sit, allowing nature full free rein, and what I leave will be no lovely garden but a sad and sorry plot of accidie. ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
