Devolution in Five Stanzas
Spring arrives wrapped in the scent of green, and how fitting; green is the color of love, and you know what they say about a young man's fancy.
And not just the young or the male - no, in spring the whole world turns to love. The sky washes the earth clean; afterward, rainbows arc across the sky in palettes never reproduced by man. Birds strut and sing, build nests, fledge young. Flowers awaken, spreading scent and pollen and seed with abandoned generosity.
And the sea - the sea! It rushes and roars in the full flood tide of renewal, never knowing soon enough will come the doldrums of summer, its ferocity damped, anesthetized in molten sunshine; but, harnessed by the moon, it continues its journey to and from the shores it caresses.
And isn't that like love - bursting into flame, fuelled by the juice of newness, of discovery. With any luck, when it calms it will continue, no longer a tumultuous, all-encompassing flood but, regulated by the heart, steady as the tide, ebbing and flowing with comforting regularity.
I do not know this first-hand, but people tell me that's how it is with love that lasts. The love I've known was always trapped in a tide pool. Spinning in endless shallow circles over rock under blistering sun, it eventually became brackish, brown and sour, unable to sustain life. ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter
