Description Springside is a 20-acre landscape that was once the country estate of Matthew Vassar, the wealthy Poughkeepsie brewer, philanthropist, and founder of Vassar College. It holds a special place in history as the only landscape of its celebrated creator, Andrew Jackson Downing, to survive largely intact.
