some nights, exhausted beyond endurance, i sit absolutely still, doing absolutely nothing but watching the clock sweep away the seconds of my life, the universe reduced to the crawl of hammered spears orbiting painted lines and numbers on a metal plate.
is this what's called being in the moment? somehow i don't think so, although i am in countless moments, just being. my body does what it must do; heart pounds, blood flows, i breathe but am lost to sentience.
inevitably something pulls me back into awareness.
i am always horrified when i actually notice the time, for though my eyes have been glued to the clock - how's that for an image? - the passage of time marked by its hands has not consciously registered.
this precipitates me into the rapacious arms of guilt, always ready to rub salt into wounds, and i hate myself for my profligacy. i could have been doing any one of a thousand things instead of living a dumbshow for those hours that can never be reclaimed.
when i look out the window at the moon, shining like a nightlight by the front door of eternity, i wonder how much closer i am to returning to stardust, and if i will be called to account for all these intervals of unconscious consciousness.
i wish i were a flower, free of self-awareness, never accountable, unburdened with expectations (self-imposed or otherwise), and always appreciated simply for its being. ~ excerpt from (un)rapt, copyright 2016 RC deWinter
