The Field Out Back
The field way out back is the best place to watch the sun set. Its been ignored for years, and what will grow there grows there. There are no trees to filter out the light, and wildflowers bloom despite the stealthy incursion of the grasses. I go there often, to this field, always walking quietly so as not to scare the birds. But when I get there I make noise sometimes I holler, sometimes I sing, sometimes I simply stamp my feet, and then the sky is filled with flutters. The birds take off, all nervous in their going, and I watch silently, so wishing I could fly. 2014 RC deWinter
