My Christmas Present
Late night in the city, walking home in December fog, not many left on the street - it was Christmas Eve. Alone with nothing to celebrate but the questionable gift of still breathing, trying to shake off the blues, I almost walked into a boy selling something on the corner of Union Square. Maybe twenty, with an old spotty mutt on a leash, he smiled as I muttered excuse me. 'Flowers?' he asked. 'Last one left,' and held out a bouquet. A mix of mums and roses and who knows what, many of the petals bent, some torn- it was pretty ragged, as if it had been dropped and reassembled into this sad arrangement in a hurry. I looked at him, about to refuse, and saw his clothes were pretty ragged too, and thought what the hell, even I deserve a present. It's kind of a mess, but the flowers still hold some beauty and they'd be something to look at besides piles of books and magazines surrounded by walls badly needing paint. I felt around in my pocket for some money. 'How much?' I asked. 'Ten dollars?' It was a question, not a demand. 'Deal,' I said and handed him a Hamilton. 'Thanks, Merry Christmas,' he smiled as he tucked the bill in his pocket. 'You too,' I answered. He headed off south with his dog. I headed off north with my ragtag bouquet. It was a little beat up but it smelled like heaven- green and fresh and far away from this maze of concrete and steel. And then I started thinking about how people want everything to be shiny and perfect, and about how imperfect and unshiny I am. If I were a bouquet of flowers I'd be pretty much like this, the last one left on Christmas Eve. 'Merry Christmas,' I whispered to the flowers. 'You're still beautiful.' There's lots of beauty left in me too.<
