The Conscript
The night is clear. The moon shines. It does not rain. These are all good things, for I am a leaderless army of one on a forced march to an unknown destination. I can see far into the future tonight, and I see nothing but this road, twisting through valleys, curving round hills, a panorama demarcated like the Stations of the Cross with the stopping places left to my own choosing. My enemies travel with me, invisible, mostly silent, but I know I can be ambushed at any moment. When they clamor and brandish their weapons I have nowhere to hide; there is no Simon, no Veronica, to provide relief. I am exhausted with the effort of being my own captain, a conscript unfitted for the role. If only there were a signal, a light, a way station with a map of what's awaiting, but there is no point in wasting thought on the elusive conditional. Perhaps this is a good time to lay down this useless field pack, to bivouac, to seek the shelter of the dark unknown. ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
