Description Oil on stretched Belgian linen. Portrait of Owen McSpadden. This piece was executed using an old world technique called 'grisaille'. I began the painting by sketching on the canvas in Sanguine conte crayon. Then I painted with wet oil (alla prima) nearly monochrome, in shades of grey that I had mixed using French Ultramarine and Naples Yellow. After the grey underpainting had dried somewhat, I glazed over the flesh tones with a thinned tint of Sap Green, then I began applying the color in glazes over the underpainting.
