death duty
stuck inside with the detritus of death the last one left to sift the remains of a small fusty life lived in a claustrophobic house every nerve screamed for deliverance on that glorious spring day
pulling things out of drawers out of closets off shelves almost weeping at the mountain of boxes each one full of meaningless paper accounting for every penny spent by a miserly mind
i swore as i sorted wiping dust off old junk going straight to goodwill stuffing clothes into bags going straight to goodwill all the while thinking bonfire
and finally facing the cupboard crammed with tatty miscellany chipped ripped dented stained worthless pretensions to culture i'd had enough
i ran outside into fresh green air sank onto lawn and lay there recovering my humanity grateful to be able to breathe
three deer picked their careful way through the forsythia into the yard one look at me and off they went bounding away glorious in their wildness
and i wanted to be one of them leaping untrammeled in the warm spring sun free of the counting house ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinterA view of a corner cupboard in the kitchen of one of the historic Early American houses in Old Wethersfield, Connecticut.
