Description The European Peacock Butterfly (Inachis io) feeding on Buddleia davidii flower in my garden. This spectacular butterfly inhabits Temperate Europe and Asia where it can be commonly found in woods, fields, meadows, pastures, parks, and gardens, and from lowlands up to 8,200 feet elevation. Striking eyespots and gaudy colours make the Peacock an unmistakable butterfly. When resting with its wings closed, the cryptic coloration of the undersides and the jagged wing margins make the species look like dead leaves or bark, affording it excellent camourflage. If startled, a resting Peacock will flash open its wings, the sudden revelation of the eyespots scaring off potential predators.
