Artist Statement My photography records a life’s journey pursuing qualities of light, trying to be in the moment with the subject as it reveals itself, providing my camera with an easy flow of composition, a vibrancy of color and a sense of serenity with which I can communicate the experience to my viewers.
I have a straightforward photojournalistic approach to the creative process with little manipulation and minor color enhancement to the presented image.
The beginning of my photographic career was influenced by Eugene Smith and the photographic essay. Upon my move to Montana 35 years ago Ansel Adams’ images of the Western Landscape inspired me to expand into nature photography. Through teaching at Montana State University I learned about Minor White and his ideas of creative expression and the communication process experienced through photography. Currently, I am drawn toward the insights of John Daido Loori, a Zen master and photographer whose writings and interpretive images have encouraged me to focus within to develop and extend my vision.
In nature photography, especially with floral images, I look for the delicacy of color saturation, a boldness of form and movement and a subtly of texture that can give viewers a serene experience as they get lost in the moment and share with me how the subject exposed itself, offering its essence to my camera.
