Vincent had been on my mind lately, a lot. I always knew he was troubled, my intuition was telling me he was even more in chaos than usual. Every night as I closed my eyes his creased unhappy face would fill my inner eyes, haunting my sleep. I dreamed of him often, and one dream in particular stands out in my memory. Though in reality he was an ocean away, in this visitation he and I were walking the streets of New Haven. We were mostly silent, each in our own chaotic inner world that accompanied us everywhere, when we found ourselves standing in front of one of the large Gothic windows set in the old original art gallery of Yale University. Vincent stopped and gazed up at the many-colored panes, clearly taken with their chaotic beauty. He began pacing agitatedly, a few steps to the left, a few steps to the right, all the while muttering and giving forth an occasional Ah... In the dream I said nothing, knowing that he was mentally constructing an image of how this window would look on a canvas. Though the day was somewhat raw and gloomy, it was clear that Vincent was completely unaware of the dampness carried in the air and the occasional bite of the wind. Finally, as though a film reel had broken, he came back to the present, looked at me and said, Shall we walk on? We did, occasionally exchanging a remark about a storefront window or someone passing by, until we came to a small caf. Let us have something warm, Vincent suggested, opening the door and gesturing me inside.We sat by a window and watched the passersby, all of whom were, as Vincent had not been, aware of the chill in the air, for they all hurried along to wherever it was they were going with no dawdling or stopping to make an observation of anything. RC deWinter is a Connecticut writer/digital artist whose artwork has been published in many print and online journals, including, among others, The American Muse, Fine Art Photography, Poetry Nook, 2River View, Pink Panther, Official Feature Online Entertainment Magazine, Garden Tripod and also used as set décor on ABC-TV’s “Desperate Housewives." In 2013 Ms. deWinter she was one of six finalists for a Shorty Award, the national social media awards, in art. Ms. deWinter is honored to be the first digital artist invited to exhibit at the Arts of Tolland Gallery in Connecticut. Her 4-week solo exhibition was an unqualified success. Her poetry publication credits include The New York Times, Uno: A Poetry Anthology, 2River View, Another Sun, Pink Panther Magazine, Pilcrow & Dagger, Plum Ruby Review, Poetry Life and Times and numerous other print/online publications.
