DescriptionClose up shot of the white water lotus in it's natural setting. This lotus was growing along the shore of Sandusky Bay in Sandusky, Ohio. The Water Lotus or Nelumbo nucifera is known by many names: Indian lotus, sacred lotus, bean of India and simply, lotus. These plants are often confused with the water lily, an entirely different plant. The water lotus has a distinctive center which will become the familiar circular seed pod lotuses are famous for. This aquatic perennial will remain viable for many years in the most favorable circumstances. The oldest recorded lotus germination was from 1300 year old seeds recovered from a dry lakebed in China. If you have the opportunity to see a water lotus in its natural setting I highly recommend you do so. A riverbed full of these is a magnificent sight.
Shawna Rowe Member Since July 2012 Artist Statement I grew up in a creative family who loved photography, music, art and random hiking adventures. That helped me to develop a love for nature and artistic expression early on. I've never limited myself to one particular medium but I do favor graphic shapes, bold colors and whimsical style. Whatever the medium, I try to include some or all of those elements in my work.
My family has always been a big inspiration and they feature in a series of satirical cartoons that I've done just for fun over the years. Each year I make a new cartoon to celebrate each of my daughter's birthdays. I've also made my own greeting cards for family members over the years.
Lately, I've been making detailed magazine collages. Each one is made of 100% recycled paper cut into tiny shapes and carefully applied much like paint onto canvas. It's an art-form that requires a lot of time and patience but I love this unusual way of creating. Thank you for visiting my gallery!
