About My Work:

Welcome to my print-on-demand gallery where you can order greeting cards of my latest artwork -- a series of Still Life oil paintings concerned with the simple joys of life, leisure, and contemplation.

"I am attracted to still life as a genre because it involves putting together an assemblage of household objects, color, and form into a thematic compositional arrangement. In most of my still life paintings I use a glass of wine as the main character to personify the human spirit. In addition, i am interested in the reflective qualities of glass and how it distorts shape, color, and light. I am also attracted to the interplay of dramatic chiaroscuro (light and shadow) on shapes and objects."

These still life paintings are meticulously painted with fine haired brushes and commonly take 4 to 5 weeks to complete depending on the complexity and detail of the composition.

About me:

Since I was a child I have lived, breathed, and have been surrounded by art. I was born in Madrid, Spain and raised in the picturesque city of Segovia, Spain. My father Manuel Montoyawas an established artist. In addition, my brother Michael and my wife Soraya Marcano are accomplished visual artists.

At an early age I remember looking at art books, walking around the house trying to identify titles of art reproductions I saw hanging on the walls, and observing while a still-life was being painted. From the inception I gained a love and appreciation for art and art history which has inspired my work.

In the 80s my family moved to Brooklyn, New York (my mother's hometown). In 1992, I obtained a B.A. in Art History from Tufts University, (Medford) MA. At the same time, I pursued my art studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston where I explored Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking. I later completed a Master's degree in Art History from Williams College, MA in 1994 with a concentration in Printmaking. While attending Williams College I started a series of graphite pencil drawings and began to consider pursuing art full-time.

In 1994, I attended Pratt Institute School of Art & Design in Brooklyn, New York where I would further my interest in Printmaking and its various forms (Aquatint, Etching, Lithography, Collagraph, and Serigraphy (silkscreen).

I work primarily in two-dimensional media such as painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, mixed media, creative graphic design, and digital art. My work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is represented in numerous private collections. I live and work in Brooklyn, New York.
