Face Value
I passed the mirror in the hallway and took a good look; not something I normally do, but today I did.
The only things familiar were the eyes - always offkilter but at least large and lustrous. But Jesus! What's with those saggy bits around the mouth and who cut a canal between the brows?
Needing to climb out of my skin, I ran off to the salt marsh and found the old path that led to Nemesky's farm. I hadn't been back there for years, and wondered what if anything might still be standing.
I knew the old lady was dead and the house had burned and Jake had gone off to the war and come back broken like so many and was who knew where.
They used to keep horses - just two, a gray and a bay - and sometimes the old lady would saddle one up and let us kids take a few turns around the paddock.
Lost in memories half a century old I forgot my melting jigsaw of a face and was ten again. I wandered the field rimmed with goldengreen phragmites, everything bathed in the warmth of afternoon June sun.
The paddock fence was gone but there was the barn - still mostly defiantly red although fraying - with a skinny salt marsh tree growing straight up in front of the doors.
It made a striking tableau: the ancient barn edged in creamy gold where the feathery wood had lost its paint and that emerald tree that made me think of Christmas.
Then I remembered my face and wondered how it is so many old decrepit things manifest a newfound beauty and wished I could be one of them.
Meanwhile, the red barn stands, regal and proud, daring me to decay with such grace. ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter
