Fantasy Art Mermaid – Galleries and Prints at Imagekind

Fantasy art mermaid pieces are not the most commonly found in the fantasy art realm, however, mermaids, half fish half beautiful human female, have always been part of ancient myths. Sailors used to tell tales of seeing the stunning creatures and being so distracted by their beauty that the boat was capsized and men lost to sea. Mermaids were said to be mischievous and would sometimes try to carry drowning men to underwater cities, only to find their charges dead once below the water. Whether drowning men on purpose or just innocently trying to find love among mortals, mermaids hold a special place within the world of fantasy.

Jarslaw Kukowski, a controversial contemporary painter, incorporates a fantasy-like feeling to most of his paintings. His pieces depicting mermaids can only be called fantasy art and they appeal to the curiosity about magic and the supernatural that lies within most people. “The Last Baltic Mermaid Catching Bird Flu” is a beautiful work with a lovely brunette mermaid arching gracefully out of the rippling ocean to touch a seagull flying past. Kukowski’s brush strokes create movement within his painting and one can almost imagine the ocean’s currents cradling the mermaid’s lithe figure. The billowy sky and light, airy tones within the painting, coupled with the central character, create the fantasy element.

Another artist within the fantasy art mermaid arena is David Delamare, a contemporary West Coast painter. His paintings show delicate mermaids with long, flowing tresses in actions that only a creature such as they could accomplish. Mermaids riding on dolphins, rising up to kiss the bows of ships, swimming through underwater cities and collecting treasure from sunken ships. One of Delamare’s paintings embodies the old myth of the impish mermaid as a young sailor, set in front of a full moon, leans perilously close to the edge of his ship to steal a kiss from a teasing specimen.
