Dark Fantasy Art – Galleries and Prints at Imagekind.

Dark fantasy art follows the darker side of fantasy fiction or science fiction. Stories within ancient mythology involving demons, gods of the underworld, or grotesque creatures are commonly told in picture form in either drawings, paintings or digital pictures. Divine intervention in the form of damnation, as opposed to help from the gods, is a favorite topic within this genre and scenes of the deep, fiery depths of the underworld are popular as well. Artists use deep, dark and rich colors, such as blacks and abysmal reds within these pieces to support the gothic and horror themes.

Art is generally about the emotions that an artist’s piece can draw out from within the recesses of a person. Dark fantasy art has this exact effect, except that the emotions felt are those of intrigue, horror, shock and curiosity, all feelings that humans are born with and drawn to. There will always be an awareness and respect for the morbid within art and artists to provide for it. Jessica Galbreth, a known fantasy artist, creates many gothic and dark fantasy art pieces. Her prints generally involve mysterious women, fairies, witches and dark angels, drawn in blood reds, blacks and shown before the light of a full moon. An air of intrigue and magic surround Galbreth’s drawings and the use of symbolic creatures such as spiders, ravens, and bats connect her central figures with their dark, fantastical surroundings.

Nene Thomas offers her interpretation of dark fantasy art in the guise of beautiful women with ominous, dark wings crouching in front of a waning moon. Her art also contains witches situated in dark, magical forests with creatures swirling around them and one can imagine that they were just conjured by the fantastical goddess herself. Again, color and magical undertones seem to play a great role the fantasy of Thomas, as well as most other of her contemporaries.
