Artist Statement Now a Cumberland area resident, will moved here from his native South Carolina 7 years ago. His 4 children give him his inspiration, relaxation and perspiration.

He fondly remembers the 35mm Petrie viewfinder camera his father bought one Christmas 35+ years ago. Will and his brother (who received an SLR Canon Ftb) were bulk loading plus–x and tri-x within a year, using a homemade darkroom in an unheated garage's spare closet.

Years flew by, cameras came and went, and after high school B&W gave way to Kodachrome and Ektachrome slide film.

"We traded the familiar smells of the red-lighted darkroom for the white-hot scent of burning bulbs in our Kodak carousel projectors," he explains.

"Some weekends my brothers and I would spend hour upon hour driving uncharted back roads and traipsing through one farmer's field after another to capture something elusive through our 50mm lenses." The results were always mixed – but the hunt for that moment of light and contrast to elevate the hobby to an Anselesk perfection became its own reward.

Today's pursuit is through a digital SLR with a 12x optical zoom and a relatively fast Leika lens. Barns, broken windows and abstract close-ups comprise the bulk of will's current prey, with an occasional distracted, soulful, glazed-over gaze capturing his attention.

"Peeling paint photography is what we called it in photo journalism class. I guess I'll keep at shooting these to find their abstract geometric balance, or until I get it to be worthy of the Zone system, whichever comes first."
