Artist Statement Well my great creative quest began about 40 years ago. I can still almost see it – with reckless abandonment a 25 year-old recovering hippie packed up his Toyota Landcruiser, grabbed his Bible, his camera, his wife and two young daughters, and leaving Deer Creek, Illinois in the dust he began his long journey into the world of higher education, fully intending to change the world for the better. Yes, I was truly inspired, inspired to inspire others I was, and still am, actually. I had that much going for me anyway...not much else actually.
I remember reading in the Bible that “the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.” And so there it was, my great commission – simple enough – all I had to do was to create within me a perfect heart, or at least a good one, and the Lord would show forth His eternal power and Godhead through the works of my hands – how hard could that be?
Well to make a long story short – I prayed for the power of God on my life, I got untreated lyme disease for seven years, lost my job, my ministry, my strength, my mental focus, and of course hope itself was heading out the door...but I clung to Him. I had that much going for me. Come to find out, that’s all I ever really needed – just trust in the Lord.
At some point in my wilderness wandering I read what an artist named Oswald Chambers said, “The biggest enemy of our devotion to Christ is our service to Him.” And that’s when it started to come to me. God, Himself was at work in my life destroying my idols – the works of my hands – so He could do something beyond my own ability.
Jesus, the greatest artist of all time, put it this way, “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” Here’s the thing; before any inspiring work can be possible in our lives, it has to become completely impossible for us to do in our own ability. We must rise above our ability, we must see beyond what we’re capable of. The truth is, when it comes to creating inspiring art, inspiring others, getting saved, saving others, baking really great biscuits...etc. we must get over Mr. satisfaction, get down off our high horse, get a glimpse of our own pathetic inability and get a hold of what God wants to do and how He wants to do it.
Well to make a short bio even shorter, I said all that to say this, God is good, all the time, and He always knows what's best for us. That’s my bio, my song, my theme...Trust in the Lord with all your heart, seek Him, find His power and His love. “I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.” – Psalms 40:1-3
“...For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.” – Genesis 41:52
