In the words of Victorian author Amelia Murray MacGregor:
Farquhar MacDonald and Lachlan MacDonald. Signed and dated 1869Farquhar MacDonald wears a kilt and plaid of the tartan of MacDonald of the Isles and Sleat. He carries an eighteenth century sword and has his targe slung on his back. Lachlan MacDonald wears the MacDonald tartan and has a fine pair of flint-lock all-steel pistols. Shown in the background is a view of the Cuillin (Cuchillin) range on Skye, looking west from Elgol. In George and Peter Anderson's Guide to the Highlands and Islands of Scotland (1842 and 1847 editions) it is stated that the dress of the Islemen 'differed from that of the mainland Highlanders. The kilt, which, no doubt, is now falling into general disuse, is not to be met with in Skye, and it seems never to have been worn there. At present, the ordinary fashion of short coats and trousers of coarse cloth universally prevails.'
