Description Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America and the 19th largest in the world. Although closer to the Pacific, it drains into the Caribbean via the San Juan River. Ometepe is the largest island on the lake and is formed by the two volcanoes of Concepcin and Maderas which are joined by a low isthmus to form one island. The island can be seen in the distance.
