Description The purple Swamphen, is an eye catching bird, seen here at Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia. It is a gallinule, from the Rail family, Rallidae and is closely related to the coot (you can see the similarity in the red leathery head plate. A dull bird in low light, it really comes into its own when you get the light right and the neck and chest shine out in the most beautiful purple iridescence. A spectacular bird with a beauty all of its own!
