Artist Statement I create because I always have.

I started drawing faces and figures when I was a child. As an adult, my creative habits were reinforced when a family member encouraged me to try painting. I had never truly worked with color before having mostly relied on my no. 2 pencil. Applying pigment to paper in the form of watercolor for the first time opened me up to a whole new way of seeing. Once I started using color, I could hardly remember what it was like only working in graphite.

I currently paint primarily in pastel. With soft pastels, the color is unparalleled and I enjoy the immediacy of the experience. I prefer to work with supports that are black to bring out the most in this medium. Many times I use black acrylic paint to prepare the support for the soft pastel.

I am drawn to painting landscapes that evoke memories of my past or to painting places that seem empty but are filled with a riot of color. Many times I choose to paint flowers in an expressive manner in order to reveal what may typically go unseen. Since I choose my subject matter each time based upon what speaks to me at that moment, I approach each painting as an experiment so that each one is fresh.

For me, art is not just about technical expertise, but also about conveying the intensity and impact of what an image means.

I am currently represented by Grace Gallery in Denver, which is a part of the Santa Fe Arts District. Please stop by and visit!

I will also be participating in the Gilpin County Art Show which begins in May and runs through August. I hope to see folks at the opening reception in June!
