Artist Statement According to Planet Magazine Fleming's paintings have garnered him a reputation as a master of Mid-Centrury Surrealism. Fleming has discussed his unique use of surrealism on several PBS affiliates. During the past 3 decades reviews of Fleming's paintings often comment on Fleming's depiction of man's mid-century optimism and excitment about the future. According to Fleming it was an era when man didn't seem to have any limits, due to breakthroughs in science, medicine, social/cultural awareness, as well as what seemed like an unlimited number of new products. The energy and optimism of the era was reflected in the architecture and design of the products of the era. Some of those products seem a little wacky today, like the three-wheeled Messerschmitt cars.
